PHYSIOTHERAPIST IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS

Physiotherapists working in ICUs have a major role in the critical care team. Practicing under physician/surgeon’s direction, they assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care and mobilization of the patient and help develop individual patient care plans.

Therapists’ services are also called for to provide emergency care to patients who are victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning or shock. During surgery as anaesthesia depresses respiration, chest physiotherapy may be prescribed to help get the patient’s lungs back to normal.
